Next Generation of Biogas Production

We make biogas production accessible to small and mid-sized farms by advancing biogas production systems to the next level. For a sustainable future and a more resilient energy supply.

Unlocking Full Potential of Biogas

Switzerland has a large amount of biomass, ideal for renewable energy production, but only a small portion is currently used, with most treated as waste to be managed.

The second-generation bioreactor by NextGas will enable over 7,500 additional farms in Switzerland to operate biogas plants on their farms, allowing them to produce district heat and electricity.

This would generate 450-500 MW of electricity, equivalent to over 3 TWh per year, enough to cover the annual energy consumption of the cities of Bern, Basel, and Schaffhausen combined.

Agriculture, especially livestock farming, carries environmental risks, but with proper management, it holds great potential for renewable energy. NextGas develops profitable solutions that turn agricultural waste into sustainable energy, transforming a challenge into a resource.

The Benefits of Biogas

For agricultural businesses, a biogas plant pays off in many ways. The farm receives electricity, hot water, valuable fertilizer and makes an important contribution to the prevention of global warming.

Renewable Energy

01

Biogas is a stable energy source year-round. Utilizing it to generate electricity helps avoid CO2 emissions from fossil fuels.

Climate protection

02

Methane is 28 times more harmfull for the climate than C02 and contributes 18% to the global warming.

Improved Fertilizer

03

Using farmyard manure in a biogas plant creates a valuable fertilizer with improved nitrogen content, higher yields, reduced odor, and fewer weeds.

The challenges of biogas in agriculture today

Too big   - Today's biogas plants are large and require farmyard manure from several hundred cows.

Too expensive   - Farmers have to form investment communities to build and operate such a large biogas plant.

Too low yield - Despite pre-treatment and co-substrates, the gas yield is just sufficient to cover the investment and operating costs.

The value of the NextGas PowerBox

For the farmer, the climate and our nature

Ideal for Medium-Sized Farms

The NextGas PowerBox is designed for dairy farms with 25 to 100 cows, enabling them to purchase and operate their own biogas plant independently, without the need for external partners or co-substrates

Energy Self-Sufficiency

Thanks to its modular design, the PowerBox can generate 25 to 100 kW of electricity, covering a significant portion of the farm's energy needs. This is especially beneficial during winter or bad weather when energy demand is high.

Additional Income Stream

Farmers can sell surplus electricity generated from biogas back to the grid at competitive prices, providing an extra revenue stream of up to 1,500 CHF per cow annually. After an amortisation period of approximately five years, this becomes a valuable source of income.

Environmental Benefits

By reducing reliance on fossil fuels, cutting methane emissions, and improving fertiliser management, farmers with a biogas plant play a crucial role in protecting the environment and contributing to sustainability.

Our Vision & Goals for the Future

We enable thousands of dairy farms to produce electricity from farmyard manure to protect the climate and generate an income from renewable energy.

01

Small farms, big impact

In Switzerland, as in many other countries, most farmers have between 25 and 100 dairy cows. If all of these farms could operate a biogas plant, it would represent a major win for both the climate and the financial well-being of farmers.

02

From dozens to thousands

To truly make a difference for the climate and the financial health of farmers, installing 10 systems per year is not enough. Our goal is to install hundreds, if not thousands, of systems over the next 5 to 10 years.

03

Innovate locally, export globally

What sets Switzerland apart isn't the type of manure produced by cows, but the innovation behind it. The NextGas Powerbox is a scalable product concept that holds great potential not only for European markets but possibly for places like India as well.
